CRUSADER IMITATIONS OF ARABIC COINS. KINGDOM OF JERUSALEM. Early Imitative Gold Coinage, Mint: Jerusalem. Imitation of a Fatimid dinar of the caliph al-Âmir bi-ahkâmi llâh, 495-524 H./1101-1130 AD. from the mint of Misr 510 H., perfectly legible reproduction of the prototype. See Nicol 2530, especially his reference to the dinar in the Istanbul Arkeoloji Müze17094/3 as a Crusader imitation; cf. Balog/Yvon 21 (also Misr 510 H., but the word sana is missing); cf. SNA Tübingen III, Egypt, 13 (dated al-Iskandarîya 514 with SG 16). 3.54 g, specific gravity 16.5.
Extremely fine

Bought from Münzen und Medaillen AG, at the Zürich coin fair in October 2002. The stylistic differences between the Fatimid prototypes and such imitations as have been included in Nicol's corpus are not easy to detect. However, the specific gravity of the Egyptian original dinars would have been close to 19.0 while the fineness of 16.6 is here considerably lower.
