CRUSADER IMITATIONS OF ARABIC COINS. KINGDOM OF JERUSALEM. Ayyubid Dirhams Struck in Accon with the Name of the King of Damascus as-Sâlih I. "Half dirham", garbled date possibly intending 648 H., "Dimashq". Bates type IA corresponding stylistically to his dirhams type IA; SNATübingen IVa 440. 2.00 g. Even strike on a rectangular flan.
Very fine

A weight of 2 grams for this and the following coin will not create a new denomination of 2/3 of a dirham. The weights of all of the imitative silver from 'Akkâ are clearly random and the coins were taken by weight and not by tale, in contrast to the opinion which Bates p. 401 and table V and Metcalf p. 100 seem to imply. Also, the fact that hybrid issues combining a half dirham die with a full dirham die, which occurs both in Damascus and in 'Akkâ (e.g. SNAT IVa 441) indicates that not too much weight was given to making the denominations distinct from one another.
