CRUSADER IMITATIONS OF ARABIC COINS. KINGDOM OF JERUSALEM. Arabic Silver Struck after the Papal Interdict of 1251. Dirham 1251 AD, ('Akkâ), a fourth specimen, apparently from a low grade alloy, struck with the same pair of dies as the first two specimens of this type. Patination like a copper coin.
Very fine
Ex Saint James Auctions, London, Auction 33, May 2015, lot no. 860. The occurrence of base metal specimens is occasionally found for the 1253 AD dirhams with the name of the Ayyubid as-Sâlih Ismâ'îl, but not so far for the Christian type dirhams. These are apparently the debased dirhams imported by the Franks to Damascus in 1259/1260, which the Damascus chronicles complain about.
