The principality and later kingdom of Cilician Armenia was founded around 1080 on the shores of the Mediterranian Sea by Armenian refugees when the lands of the Kingdom of Armenia south of the Kaukasus mountains were overrun by Seljuk Turk tribes from Central Asia. In 1199 Levon I was crowned king. He received his kingship as a vassal of the German emperor. So the Armenians were no crusaders, but they were involved in the crusades through treaties, marriages, support and assistance for one or the other party. The Armenians were Christians with their own national Christian Church .
