Ex F. R. Künker KG, Osnabrück, Auktion 117, 28. 9. 2006, lot 5123. Bought from UBS Numismatics, Zürich, at the Zürich coin fair in Oct. 2007. This coin is an imitation of the Hyperpera of John III Dukas-Vatatzes of Nikaea, 1222-1254. We know of these imitations from the Florentine merchant Francesco Balducci Pegolotti. In his book "Pratica della Mercatura" ("The Merchant's Handbook") he describes "Latin gold perperi" and "common gold perperi". They differ slightly in their gold content, the "common gold perperi" being the better ones. The Latin gold perperi can be distinguished from the common gold perperi by a siglum of three or four dots on the obverse above the side of the throne.
