World Coins - India(?) - Julia Domna - Barbarous Imitation Gold Venus Aureus. After 200 AD Copying Rome mint issue. Obv: [IVLIA DO]MNA AVG legend with draped bust right. Rev: VENERI [VICTR] legend with Venus standing right, back towards spectator her robe lowered to expose buttocks, holding apple and palm, resting left arm on column. It has been suggested that this copy originated in India; Roman aureii occur quite frequently throughout India and seem to have travelled there through trade from the time of the Roman Empire and they were apparently prized. This example has obviously been directly copied from an original of the type. Near as struck; flan clipped.
