World Commemorative Medals - Italy - Cardinal Christoforo Madruzzo - Medallion. Circa 1543 AD or later Cast bronze. Obv: profile bust with CHRIST MADRV CARDIN [ ]HS ET PRIN TRIDEN ET BRIX legend for 'Christoforo Madruzzo, Cardinal, Bishop and Prince of Trento and Brescia'. Rev: the bishop distributing largesse to the poor (perhaps flood victims?) with STATUS MEDIOL RESTITUTORI OPTIMO legend for 'noble saviour of Milan' with SECURITAS PADI below for 'the safety of the Po'. See Keary, C. F., Guide to the Italian medals exhibited in the King's Library, 1881, pp.55-56. 84.52 grams, 58mm. ("). Property of a Kent, UK collector; with an old manuscript letter, circa 1960, from Glasgow Museums & Art Galleries describing the piece. Cardinal Christoforo Madruzzo (1512-1549 AD) attended conclave on the death of Pope Paul III which lasted from 29 November 1549-7 February 1550 due to political machinations, especially in the interests of Emperor Charles and King Henri of France; Madruzzo seems to have played a significant part, although not as a candidate for the papacy and he is recorded as one of only four cardinals who refrained from the adoration of Cardinal Giovanni Maria Ciocchi del Monte on his election as Pope Julius III. Dr Stuart M K Henderson, listed as Director on the letter from Glasgow Museums & Art Gallery, held this position for the period 1948-1972. Near extremely fine; old attempted piercing at top of obverse. Rare.
