Bank of England, Cyril Patrick Mahon (1925-1929), 10 shillings, ND (1928), serial number A01 000087, brown, ornate crowned vignette of Britannia at left, value at right, reverse brown, value at left and right, also £1, ND (1928), serial number A01 000087, green and pale blue, ornate crowned vignette of Britannia at left, value at right,, (EPM B214, Pick 362a, 363a), in PMG holders 66 EPQ Gem Uncirculated and 67 EPQ* Superb Gem Uncirculated. Not only are these notes accompanied by their vellum envelope with title in gold 'BANK OF ENGLAND, 22 NOVEMBER 1928', but several pieces of historically interesting and very rare ephemera - not least a personally-signed letter from one Winston S. Churchill. It seems these notes were gifted from the Bank of England to a Mr. A.M. Samuel, Member of Parliament and responsible for the 'Currency Note Bill' which amalgamated the Treasury Series notes with those white notes of the Bank of England; Churchill's letter dates from his time as Chancellor of the Exchequer and thanks Samuel for all his hard work, in addition to mentioning taking a holiday! From a further accompanying letter addressed to Samuel from the Secretary of the Bank, it appears he initially requested serial number 1 of each but had to 'make do' with number 87 as No.1 had been promised to H.M. King George V. Also an envelope signed by Samuel, indicating his role and reason for being presented with the notes. An immaculate pair of these iconic notes and a unique grouping (6).
