Judaea. Trajan Æ27 of Sepphoris Diocaesarea. 98-117 CE. ΤΡΑΙΑΝΟΣ ΑΥΤΟΚΡΑΤΩΡ ЄΔΩΚЄΝ, laureate head right / ΣЄΠΦΩΡΗΝΩΝ in two lines within wreath. RPC III 3936; De Saulcy 1; BMC 1; Sofaer -. 16.00g, 27mm, 6h.
Near Very Fine.
This coin bears the remarkable inscription ΤΡΑΙΑΝΟΣ ΑΥΤΟΚΡΑΤΩΡ ЄΔΩΚЄΝ ('Trajan the Emperor gave') which suggests Trajan awarded something to the city. We cannot be certain what the gift was, although various numismatists have argued that it was the permission to strike coins (see RPC I p. 510). Indeed, no coinage was made at Sepphoris during the Flavian period.
