Ex Michael Kelly Collection of Roman Silver Coins; collector's ticket included;
Ex The New York Sale, Auction II, 2 December 1999, lot 269.

One of the very earlies issues struck under Trajan, this coin is dated to the period immediately following the death by fever of the emperor Nerva on January 27. Having passed away at his villa in the Gardens of Sallust, Nerva was succeeded by his adopted son Trajan, who had already acquired a glittering reputation as a brilliant administrator and soldier.

On this important propagandistic coin type, we see Trajan being handed the metaphorical reins of government by his now-deceased predecessor and adoptive father; the symbolism of the globe being passed from one great statesman to the next is underlined both figuratively and literally by the exergual legend PROVID: by the grace of Nerva's foresight and preparation the lawful and peaceful governance of the world would continue uninterrupted.
