Today William Carruthers is best remembered for his work in establishing the Natural History Museum in South Kensington and overseeing the move into the then new building. He was President of the Linnean Society (1886-90) and elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1871. He was also a member of the Botanical Society of Edinburgh and President of the Geologists Association of London (1875-76).
