London 17th Century Tokens from the Collection of Quentin Archer (Part IV)

London (City), Blackfriars, Tho. Sutton, Penny, 1671, 2.30g/12h (N 6667; BW. 349). Nail piercing and slightly buckled, otherwise fine with partial green patina, extremely rare; superior to the Norweb specimen £100-£150

---

Provenance: Wallis & Wallis Auction (Lewes), 12 June 2012, lot 55 (part).

From this specimen it is clear that the legend on the obv. reads mun hous and not mum hous as asserted in SCBI Norweb. In his 1855 catalogue of the Beaufoy cabinet J.H. Burn stated that 'the acquisition of this piece has ever been a desideratum with collectors; it is engraved in Snelling's Copper Coinage, pl.v fig. 39'
