Meiji Counterstamped Trade Dollar ND (1897) XF45 NGC, Osaka mint, KM-Y28b.2, JNDA 0-12A. Displaying round Gin counterstamp on a Year 8 (1875) Trade Dollar (cf. KM-Y14). Variety with counterstamp to right of denomination. An extremely scarce countermarked issue to be sure, this being not only one of just two certified by NGC and the first of the type we have handled, but also only the second example we can locate coming to auction in the past decade. Notably bright and flashy for the assigned grade, wear appears strikingly minimal, rub mostly contained to the area of flatness created by the added stamp. Noted as the rarest counterstamped issue of the period in the Standard Catalog of World Coins, with only the left countermark mentioned by JNDA.
