Straits Settlements
British Colony. Victoria 20 Cents 1871 AU Details (Cleaned) NGC, KM12. Mintage: 16,000. The undisputed keydate within the 19th-century Straits Settlements series, this being the only year known to have a mintage figure below 20,000 at a time when most years normally saw hundreds of thousands of 20 Cents produced. Almost universally found heavily worn due to longtime use in commerce and rarely found above the VF level, the present piece, while admittedly lightly cleaned long ago, still retains much of its original eye appeal, the engraving of the queen's portrait quite exalted yet elegant, hints of luster at the lettering, and the reemergence of pilot-light blue and champagne tones clear on the reverse. A more affordable example of this otherwise almost unattainable type, an XF Details example achieving $1380 in our 2011 Long Beach sale.
