Netherlands East Indies
Java. United East India Company tin Duit 1796 AU53 NGC, KM179, Scholten-486 (RRRR). An extremely scarce sort of emergency coinage produced to relieve a perceived shortage of duit coinage on the island in 1796, the present offering seems by all appearances to be among the great rarities of the Javanese series, with most of the original mintage melted down after less than a year of production between September 21 and May 19. Notoriously crudely produced, not only does this particular example represent a seldom-seen survivor, but its condition is virtually unheard-of for the issue--bold, well-centered, not a touch of corrosion, and correspondingly the single finest certified by NGC for a type that rarely escapes the VF range.
