Hong Kong Hongkong & Shanghai Banking Corp. PMG Very Fine 30. A note forced into circulation after the Japanese invasion of Hong Kong during World War II. As these were ready notes printed by Bradbury Wilkinson and sitting in the bank's vault, any chief accountant's signature was required to officiate putting them into circulation. In fact, there are at least three different chief accountants who signed this denomination. The Japanese occupation coerced these "duress notes" into public use. The intent was for these notes to be used to buy strategic goods in neutral Macau and other countries. These notes were feared at first to have only a limited exchange period after the war, therefore the majority were quickly redeemed, leaving few large denominations such as this $50 in private hands. The serial numbers for $50 denomination "duress notes" are B350,001 through B550,000. Rare in any form, and great historical content. Ink stamp. HID08701242017
Estimate: 2000-3000 USD
