IONIA. Magnesia ad Maeandrum. Circa 465-400 BC. Trihemiobol (Silver, 12 mm, 0.89 g, 1 h). Male figure standing front, head to left, leading with his right arm a horse standing facing to left, head to right. Rev. Eagle flying to right within incuse square. CNG 72 (2006), 733. Leu Web Auction 4 (2018), 269 var. (tetrobol). Extremely rare, perhaps the second known. Edge crack, otherwise, very fine.
CNG attributes this issue to 'Themistokles (?)', stating that it fits well into the coinage of Themistokles and Archepolis as described by Nollé and Wenniger. However, the letters on the example in Leu Web Auction 4 (2018), 269 do not resemble the monograms of Themistokles or Archepolis, and the lack of a dotted square border and the style of the eagle point, in this cataloguer's opinion, to a somewhat later date. It is, in any case, a highly interesting issue and certainly worthy of further research.
