China, People's Republic, proof 5 oz. gold 500 yuan, 1998, Greeting Spring, Chinese lantern, rev. children making kites (KM.1023), certified and graded by NGC as Proof 69 Ultra Cameo, the finest example known
With certificate stating number 27.
Due to a manufacturing flaw, all the other six pieces that have surfaced and been certified have been graded less than 69. According to King Chan's Standard Catalog of Gold & Silver Coins of China, only 34 pieces of the authorized 128 were minted, making this issue among the rarest of all the 5 oz gold. Other reliable sources suspect that some were remelted, leaving the surviving population unknown. In May 2012 an uncertified piece of lesser quality brought over US$300,000 in a major Shanghai auction. The only other auction record we found was an NGC68 which brought US$230,000 in August 2017 during an ebb in the market.
