The Panchala janapada was located in northern India, in modern-day Uttar Pradesh. It was one of the great clans or republics, the mahajanapadas, recorded by Buddhist chronicles. These punchmarked coins are among the earliest in the Indian subcontinent.    The weight of this specimen (1.98 g) is higher than the average weight for this series (1.70 g).
