Zoilos I. Ca. 145-130 B.C. AR drachm (18 mm, 1.17 g). Diademed bust of Zoilos right; Greek legend around BAΣIΛEΩΣ ΔIKAIOY/ ΖΩIΛOY / Naked Herakles standing facing, holding a wreath, club and lion skin; above right, Nike holding a palm branch crowns him; Kharoshthi legend around Maharajasa dhramikasa/ Jhoilasa. HGC 12, 219; MIG 257a; Bop 4; SNG ANS 974. A choice portrait of this enigmatic king, with wonderful old toning. Rare. Very fine.
Zoilos I was a contemporary and possible opponent of Menander I. The likely context for his rise to power was the chaos created by the murder of Eukratides in c. 145 BC. All of Zoilos I's coins are rare. This variety has his name written in a straight line under his bust.
