Aspavarma. Ca. 1st century B.C. BI tetradrachm (20 mm, 9.97 g). King mounted on a horse right, holding up a whip, with Greek legend around BAΣIΛEΩΣ BAΣIΛEΩN MEΓAΛOY/ AZOY / Pallas Athena standing right, holding spear, with Kharoshthi legend around Imtravarmaputrasa Aspavarmasa strategasa jayatasa. Senior 183.502. Scarce and choice. Nearly very fine.
Aspavarma was the son of Indravarma, the founder of the dynasty. Since this coin names him as a strategos (viceory), it is possible that he ruled in the name of the powerful Indo-Parthian overlord Gondophares.
