The Dromadaire sank on the morning of 19 February 1762 after running aground in stormy weather on the reef off of São Vicente Island, part of the Cape Verde Islands in the Atlantic Ocean off the western coast of Africa. She was carrying 154 people, 20 guns and ammunition, and a chest of silver coin. A nearby Dutch ship was able to rescue exactly one half of the passengers and crew, the rest perishing in the rough waters. The wreck was discovered in 1996.
