Pfalz, Electorate, Karl Philipp von Neuburg (1716-1742), Rheingold ducat, undated (circa 1740), Mannheim, cuirassed bust right, rev., fulgent sic littora rheni, sunlit view of Mannheim with castle across the Rhine, in ex., dvcatus auri rhenani, 3.49g (F. 2024; Haas 23; KM 294), possible trace of mounting above bust on obverse (but no such trace visible on reverse), flan slightly buckled and with a few scuffs, otherwise extremely fine and rare. The dies for these undated coins, generally regarded as the very first ducats to be made from gold recovered from the Rhine, were prepared by the master engraver Wiegand Schäffer. The spelling of littora for litora and mixed lettering in dvcatus are characteristic of this rare early Rheingold issue.
