Germany, Johann Egolf von Knöringen, on his election as prince-bishop of Augsburg (1573-1575), silver medal, (15)73, unsigned, IO EGOLPHVS D G EPS AVGVSTANVS, bust right in ruff and fur-lined coat, rev., CATHOLICA TVTISSIMA FIDES ANNO 73, his coat of arms surmounted by cardinal's mitre and crosier, 33.5mm, 13.43g (Habich -), pierced, some marks in obverse field, very fine and an extremely rare contemporary cast, possibly unique and unrecorded. Johann Egolf von Knöringen was born in 1537 and was educated at the University of Ingolstadt and later at the University of Freiburg. In the 1550s he travelled widely in Rome, Vienna, northern Germany and the Low Countries. He was ordained a priest in 1561 and in 1571 Pius V appointed him protonotary apostolic to deal with the disputes in Augsburg with the Jesuits. He formed an important library and collections of manuscripts, coins and other kunstkammer objects which were given to Ingolstadt University in 1573, the year in which he was elected prince-bishop of Augsburg. He died at Dillingen an der Donau in 1575 aged only 37 and never having been consecrated as a bishop.
