Great Britain, Charles I and Henrietta Maria, gold Royalist badge, by Thomas Rawlins, bust of Charles right wearing lace collar, rev., draped bust of Henrietta Maria left wearing small coronet and pearl necklace; signed below T. RAWLINS. F, 38 x 29.5mm, 21.15g (MI 354/215; Eimer 169), cast and chased, polished and with the four small lugs removed from the edge, very fine and of the highest rarity in gold. Provenance: Morton & Eden 52, 29 November 2011, lot 325 where the lot included the silver box into which the medal was loosely fitted, inscribed to a Captain Wm. Green, Royal Navy, circa early 19th century. In the Plates to Medallic Illustrations it is mentioned that of all the Royalist badges of Charles I and Henrietta Maria listed under MI, 213-228, only gold medals are known of the type offered here – and an example in gold is in the British Museum collection. There appear to be no records of another gold medal of this type at auction. None was in the Montagu (1897), Murdoch (1904) or Heckett (1977) collections, or the more recent Christopher Foley collection (2014).
