The Master IO. F. F., The Death of Marcus Curtius, bronze plaquette (unsigned), late 15th century, Marcus Curtius on horseback, plunging into the chasm; behind, a temple with distraught figure within and with seven soldiers, one mounted, looking on, 56.7mm (cf. Molinier 139; Bange 659; Kress 102, fig. 133; Bargello 126), small piercing at top, very fine contemporary cast with brown patina, rare. This rare plaquette is usually found shield-shaped. The only other circular version appears to be in the Bargello and is set within a raised border. There is a woodcut of the scene in reverse by Lucas Cranach the Elder of c. 1506, which provides a terminus ante quem for the date of the plaquette.
