Moderno, The Rape of Deianira, bronze plaquette, early 16th century, the centaur Nessus carrying off Deianira, wife of Hercules, 50 x 48.4mm (Bargello 167-168; Scaglia V.30, variant B), very fine early cast, reverse with collector's number in red paint. Provenance: Pablo Bosch y Barrau (1842-1915), Balclis auction, Barcelona, 11 February 2015, lot 224 part. The image is usually found as the central part of a larger oblong plaquette with rounded ends, with Nessus and Deianira set between medallions of Victory above and Hercules killing the Stymphalian birds below – as Molinier 150; Bange 486; Kress 165, fig. 161.
