DYNASTS OF LYCIA. Vekhssere I, circa 450-430 BC. Stater (Silver, 19 mm, 8.37 g, 11 h), Xanthos, c. 440-430. Head of Athena to right, wearing crested Attic helmet adorned with three olive leaves and palmette, round earring and pearl necklace. Rev. Laureate head of Apollo right; diskeles to right. Müseler V 7 (same dies). Vismara, Wekhssere, 51. A rare and elegant coin. Some striking flatness, double-striking and with an obverse struck from a worn die, otherwise, good very fine.
The head of Athena on the obverse is actually a particularly close imitation of the head of Athena on contemporary Athenian tetradrachms. The dies of this coin were prepared by a very skillful artist.
