KINGS OF CAPPADOCIA. Ariarathes IV, circa 220-163 BC. Half chalkous (Bronze, 12 mm, 1.51 g, 1 h). Draped royal bust to left, wearing bashlyk. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ / ΑΡΙΑΡΑΘΟΥ Archer striding right, drawing his bow. Simonetta 1 (as Ariarathes II). Extremely rare and one of the best of the very few examples known. Nearly extremely fine.
Although Simonetta attributed this type to Ariarathes II, the fine quality of the portrait on this example allows us to attribute it to Ariarathes IV; compare the many similarities between this portrait and those on the previous lots.
