Pupienus, 238. Sestertius (Orichalcum), Rome, 22 April - 29 July 238. IMP CAES M CLOD PVPIENVS AVG Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Pupienus to right, seen from behind. Rev. VICTORIA AVVGG (sic!) / S - C Victory standing facing, her head turned to left, holding wreath in her right hand and palm frond in her left. Unknown with this spelling variant on the reverse. Cf. BMC 58, Cohen 38, and RIC 23a for the usual type with the legend ending in AVG. Green patina. Rough and surely slightly tooled surfaces, otherwise, very fine.
This coin shows us an amusing die engraver's mistake: the legend cutter forgot what he was doing and instead of using the simple AVGG as an abbreviation to indicate the co-existence of two emperors, he doubled it to read AVVGG.
