A fine Nazca bowl from Peru, ca. 200 - 400 AD. This nicely detailed polychrome example is 4-3/4? in diameter and features two depictions of the Horrible Bird. Each is shown with its body filled with trophy heads, with another trophy head at the end of the tongue or serpent protruding from the beak. An ancient repair is evidenced by two pairs of small drill holes on either side of a stabilized crack, which also show the importance this vessel held for its original owner. Strong paint and good mineral deposits. Cf. Proulx ?Sourcebook of Nasca Iconography?, page 81. Value range: $500 - $600.
