Richard II (1377-99), Half-Noble, Tower, type Ia {with altered obverse die of Edward III}, 3.16g [48.8gns], 8h, ric over edw in ricard di gra [rex angl 7 franc] dns hib et aq, ropes 3/1 {twisted}, ornaments ?-1-1-, quatrefoils 2/[?], rev. i.m. cross pattée [6], double [?] saltire stops in legend and by mintmark, large r over e in centre [?] (Webb Ware 1a; Stewartby Ia, cf. pp. 239; Schneider I, 123; N.1309; S.1664), cleaned and somewhat flat with die flaws, heavily clipped, otherwise fair to fine, very rare, same dies as next.
The cataloguer notes that this obverse die was also paired with the reverse die mules of Post-Treaty coinage of Edward III (cf. Baldwin 101, 28 September 2016, lot 3120).
