Richard II (1377-99), Quarter-Noble, Tower, type Ia, 1.66g [25.6gns], 6h, double saltire stops, a of ricard with drooping wedge top-bar, nothing over shield, rev. i.m. cross pattée [6], large r in centre (Webb Ware 1a; Stewartby Ia; Schneider I, 138, same obverse die/125; N.1317; S.1672), slightly short of flan, otherwise good fine with underlying cabinet tone, very rare.

Intriguingly the obverse die pairs with an example from the Schneider collection for the type Ib issue (new lettering, lys in centre of reverse), perhaps suggestive of this type representing a transitional muling between the two classes.
