Edward IV, First Reign (1461-70), Quarter-Ryal, Tower, type VIIIA {altered dies}, 1.93g {29.8gns}, 11h, m.m. sun over crown [both sides], reads angl z fr, trefoil stops, tressure of four arches, rev. lys stops, tressure of eight arches, nothing in spandrels (Blunt and Whitton, type VIII, variant 1; Stewartby VIIIA; Webb Ware [1985] dies 17/31; Schneider I, 414, same dies; N.1560; S.1965), significant flan crack, otherwise on a full flan, struck somewhat flat, otherwise a bold fine, very rare.

Alongside the Schneider specimen, provenanced to the Lockett [3131]; Roth [217]; Montagu [1896, 590]; Brice and Rev. Shepherd [1885, 178] collections, only one other besides this example could be traced by the present cataloguer, although the Hilton Price [55] and formerly Murdoch [355] example has a later counterstamp over the obverse mintmark in the form of a small s.
