England, Anglo-Saxon Kings, Aethelred II (AD 978-1016) Imitation AR Penny. Long cross type. Uncertain mint (imitating Bath?) or moneyer. +EDELRED RE ИOX, bare-headed and draped bust left; pellet behind neck / +DVHTΛИИOƎΛI (retrograde), voided long cross with triple-crescent terminals. Baldwin's 93, 5 May 2015, lot 20 (same dies); for general type, cf. SCBC 1151. 1.83g, 20mm, 3h.
Good Very Fine; peck mark to rev., old cabinet tone. Extremely Rare, perhaps the second known example?
From a private British collection.
With blundered legends that give no clear mint signature or moneyer's name, it is likely that this is the second known example of a contemporary local imitation of Athelred II's coinage.
