Samaria, uncertain mint Fourrée 1/16 Shekel. Circa 375-332 BC. War galley left on two zigzag lines of waves; above, Semitic letter B to left and lily or lotus flower to right / Persian king or hero standing right, holding dagger in right hand and with the left grappling the forelock of lion standing before him on hind legs; O between them. Unpublished in the standard references, for a similar flower symbol cf. Meshorer-Qedar, Samarian Coinage, Jerusalem 1999, 6, 13, 44, 84, 100 and 182-3; for general type cf. Meshorer-Qedar 7, 22, 55-56 and 199-202; for the Ba'alshillem II of Sidon prototype type cf. Elayi & Elayi, 851-1191 and HGC 10, 238. 0.52g, 10mm, 8h.

The lily (lilium candidum) grew in great quantities in ancient Israel and a precious perfume was manufactured from it. Its white colour symbolised purity and the prophet Hosea compared Israel to a lily (Hosea 14:6).
