Carolingian. Louis the Pious (814-840) Denier ND (822/3-840) AU53 NGC, No mint (possibly Verdun), Class 3, cf. Rob-1208, cf. MEC I-802, cf. Dep-1179, Coupland Group H-Plate IV, 1-4. 19mm. 1.66gm. A truly remarkably well-formed and carefully measured representative, quite in line with Coupland's classification of the Group H coinage of Verdun, though his plates, as well as Depeyrot's line drawings, illustrate a somewhat more squat temple. Sold with old collector's envelope.
