Carolingian. Charles the Bald (840-877) Denier ND (840-864) XF45 NGC, No mint (possibly Orleans), Class 1, cf. Rob-1321, cf. MEC I-846, cf. Dep-1189, cf. Coupland Group D-Plate 23, 43-44 (obverse legend variety). +CΛRLVS RE+ FR (F inverted), cross pattee with pellet in each angle / +XPISTIΛNΛ RELICIO, temple portico. Gorgeous obverse rainbow tone pairs nicely with a well-made flan and interestingly cut lettering. Though the present cataloger has not been able to locate another example with an inverted F in the obverse legend, the remaining features seem to match the criteria laid out by Coupland, as well as the stylistics illustrated by Depeyrot for this mint. Sold with old CNG auction tag.
