Charles the Bald (840-877) Denier ND (840-864) AU55 NGC, Orleans mint, Class 1, Rob-Unl., MEC I-835, MG-944, Dep-725, Coupland-Plate 21, 18. Later form gate. 20mm. 1.55gm. +CΛRLVS REX FR, cross pattee, pellet in each angle / ΛVRE | • LI • | ΛNIS (S sideways), city gate with pellet to either side and cross below. A highly coveted "monumental" type from early in Charles' reign, surprisingly little wear observable upon close examination, and an even argent tone giving a pleasant aged appearance to the piece. Sold with old collector's envelope.
