Hugh Capet (987-996) Denier ND F15 NGC, Beauvais mint, Rob-2251, Dup-1. 21mm. 1.18gm. Struck under Bishop Herveus. +HERVEVS HVGO REX (HE and VE ligate), cross pattee with pellets in second and third angles / +BELVΛCVS CIVITΛS, Carolus monogram. A rare, if characteristically crudely struck, issue that may properly be termed the first royal French type of the Capetian dynasty, and exists as one of the few attainable coin types in the name of Hugh Capet. Despite the relative shallowness of the devices, what features can be determined suggest a rather measured style to the engraving, expressing minimal doubling and comparatively good centering. Sold with old collector's envelope.
