KAROLVS x DI x GR | FRAnCORV x RЄX, crowned, mantled figure of Charles standing facing beneath a Gothic dais, sword in right hand, scepter surmounted by Hand of Justice in left / +XPC ★ VIИCIT ★ XPC ★ RЄGИAT ★ XPC ★ IMPЄRAT, cross fleury with crowns and lis alternating in angles within quadrilobe; lis in spandrels. Issue from 20 April 1365. An absolutely astonishing grade for this quintessential French hammered gold type, this supreme gem being the single finest graded to-date at NGC out of 122 certified examples. Crisp to the extreme with a perceivable micro-granularity to the surfaces, the flan almost perfectly round and just minutely undersized. An absolute must for the connoisseur, and likely among the finest extant. Sold with old Schweizerische Kreditanstalt Numismatische Abt. auction envelope.
