Maratha Confederacy, Itawa Mint, Silver Rupee, 14 RY, Broad flan, In the name of Shah Alam II, Obv: sikka mubarak badshah ghazi Shah Alam, Letter Ghain & Trident joint together, Rev:
sana 14 julus zarb Itawa at bottom, 10.97g, 28.00mm, (Variant of KM # 267, RY is
unlisted), about extremely fine, toning, Extremely Rare.
The issues of the Marathas, struck whilst they were in occupation of Itawa, consists entirely
of rupees in the usual Mughal style. The occupation by the Marathas commenced about
1752. The Maratha rupees in the name of Shah Alam II ceased after 1761 when they were
driven out from Itawa by the Rohillas. But the Marathas were able to reoccupy the city
again and resumed the coins in 1771 (regnal year 12). Their final issue lasted only until
1774 (regnal year 16), when they were finally ejected by the Nawab of Awadh and the
Rohillas.
There is nothing distinctive about the various issues of the Rohillas and the Marathas
except for the dates and the various symbols that appear on these coins.
