Obv: NERO CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG GER P M TR P IMP P P Bust laureate r., Medusa head and aegis on front shoulder. Rx: PACE P R TERRA MARIQ PARTA IANVM CLVSIT S - C Temple of the Twin Janus (Ianus Geminus) near the Roman Forum, closed double doors at r. with garland hanging above them, each door divided into three panels with a large circular handle in the central panel, latticed window to l. at top of side wall. The reverse legend forms a complete sentence: "Since peace has been established for the Roman people on land and sea, he closed the temple of Janus." The legend first appears on aurei in 64 AD, so the closure of the temple apparently took place immediately after Corbulo's settlement with the Parthians in the preceding year, 63 AD.Beautiful portrait of Nero with very clear and sharp image of the Temple of Janus with door closed, meaning the empire was at peace. Dark brown toning. EF
