Attica, Athens, New Style. Tetradrachm; Attica, Athens, New Style; Magistrates Miki- and Theophra-, Nike in Quadriga, c. 137/6 BC, Tetradrachm, 16.91g. Thompson-319, our rev. die not illustrated. Obv: Helmeted head of Athena r. Rx: Owl standing r. on amphora, head front; ethnic and magistrates' names l. and r., in r. field Nike in quadriga r.; H on amphora, SO below; all within olive wreath. Ex Gemini XI, 12 January 2014, lot 132 ("Ex Richard P. Miller Collection, purchased from Palladium, 4 March 1996"). Miki(on), the first magistrate for this issue, must be "a member of the famous Athenian family of that name prominent throughout the Hellenistic period", and his Nike in Quadriga symbol "is clearly a reference to the Panathenaic victory or victories" that he is known from inscriptions to have won (Thompson, p. 106)..
