Attica, Athens, New Style. Tetradrachm; Attica, Athens, New Style; Magistrates Polycharm- and Nikag-, Winged Caduceus, c. 133/2 BC, Tetradrachm, 16.87g. Thompson-368, new rev. die with third magistrate Phanokles. Obv: Helmeted head of Athena r. Rx: Owl standing r. on amphora, head front; ethnic and magistrates' names l. and r., winged caduceus in l. field; third magistrate FANO/K?E in r. field, A on amphora, SF below; all within olive wreath. Acquired from Pars Coins, January 2017. An important addition to the corpus of New Style Athenian tetradrachms, for two reasons. First, Margaret Thompson discovered that this obverse die was used for two different issues, Anchor and Star on the one hand and Winged Caduceus on the other, proving that these two issues probably directly followed one another; but she knew only one worn specimen attesting the use of this obverse die in the Winged Caduceus issue. Our coin may be only the second known to show this die link, and it is in excellent condition. Secondly, our coin confirms the appearance of the third magistrate Phanokles on tetradrachms of this issue; Thompson (p. 150) knew this magistrate only on drachms, being unable to verify two such tetradrachms which had been described without images in earlier literature..
