Diva Faustina Senior (AD 138-140/1). AV aureus (21mm, 7.38 gm, 5h). NGC Choice MS 5/5 - 5/5. Rome, after AD 141. DIVA-FAVSTINA, draped bust of Faustina Senior right, seen from front, hair elaborately waved in several loops around head under thin band, braided, drawn up and coiled on top with pearls / AVGV-STA, Ceres standing facing, veiled head left, short lighted torch upward in each hand. RIC III (Antoninus Pius) 357a. Calicó 1758a. High relief portrait on blazing lustrous flan.

Ceres, goddess of agriculture and motherhood, was the central figure in Rome's "Plebian Triad," along with Liber and Libera. She is shown on the reverse of this aureus bearing torches, searching the dark underworld for her daughter Proserpina, who had been borne off by Dis Pater (aka Pluto).
