Great Britain
Oliver Cromwell Shilling 1658 MS63 NGC, KM-A207, S-3228, ESC-1005. Bearing the only commoner ever to feature on the obverse of a British coin, this exceptional choice Shilling boasts an immensely bold strike giving full definition to Thomas Simon's elegantly engraved design. A stark break from the contemporary Commonwealth coinage of the time, this issue represents the combination of Simon's genius engraving with Pierre Blondeau's engineering know-how cumulating in a fabulous piece of numismatic art. Scarcely do representatives of Cromwell's portrait coinage survive in Mint State as, despite being considered by some as patterns, they more often than not exhibit considerable evidence of circulation. This piece shows no evidence of wear, considerable underlying luster flashing beneath rich gold and steel-blue tone, its eye appeal extraordinary; an outlier for the series and deserving of a premium bid.
