Victoria Proof "Gothic" Crown 1847 PR63+ Cameo NGC, KM744, S-3883, ESC-2578 (R2). Plain edge, N over inverted N in UNITA. By William Wyon. Struck in pure silver. The discerning collector of English coinage will have seen many Gothic Crowns enter the marketplace in recent years as popularity soars for this exceptional, ever-celebrated type. Few, however, will have encountered a piece such as this, produced in pure silver yet bearing minimal tone allowing full appreciation for the natural beauty of its host metal. Indeed, it is difficult to imagine that this Crown looked significantly different when first struck in 1847, its crisp white surfaces gleaming with considerable reflectivity, only minor contact marks peppering its surfaces. Notably it has been awarded the coveted 'Cameo' designation (seldom seen for this type), in recognition of the charming matte frost to Victoria's crowned portrait.
