Jamaica
British Colony gold Counterstamped 5 Pounds ND (1758) AU50 NGC, KM11.4, Prid-1, Gordon-1 (this coin). Struck on a 1751 Peru 8 Escudos, counterstamped either side with a floriate "GR" within a circular indent. Perhaps the most challenging type of the West Indies cut and countermarked series to obtain, supposedly just 9 or 10 specimens known of which we have only handled two previously. One was graded XF Details (Tooled) and realized $19,000 hammer in our January 2018 sale, whilst the other was an XF45 example which realized $38,000 hammer in our September 2015 sale. Accordingly, this Almost Uncirculated piece is the finest we have had the pleasure to encounter. Superbly bold, the countermark firm yet still allowing some of the original detail to peek through, the planchet warmly colored a rich aged-gold with apricot hints in the legend. An exceptionally rare and enticing piece of colonial history, and sure to become a centerpiece of a fine countermark collection.
