'ATYPICAL' COINS, Emesa type. Macrinus. AD 217-218. AR Tetradrachm (24mm, 11.06 g, 1h). Laureate head right / Eagle standing facing, head and tail left, with wings spread, holding wreath in beak; between legs, radiate and draped bust of Shamash left. Prieur –. Toned, some porosity. VF. Extremely rare, this coin was not part of the Prieur collection at the time of his book's publication, and no other Emesa type atypical coins were noted.

From the Michel Prieur Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Group Electronic Auction 182 (20 February 2008), lot 153.

Prieur lists a number of "atypical" coins in his catalog. Some of these can be linked to official issues by style or die links, while others clearly are contemporary imitations.
